Conserving Energy at Hagbourne

Alternative Energy Sources -wind project

December 2003 -Our  wind turbine has arrived and the school council members are having a preview before the school sees it. The lamp post is expected to be erected before the end of term and the turbine along with two panels of photo cells, will be mounted on it. The electricity generated will be stored in batteries and used to power a water feature as well as lighting in the cycle storage facility. It is a most exciting project and one of the first in a primary school in Britain. Click here to see more of our wind turbine

Using Solar energy

Our swimming pool at Hagbourne school is heated by solar panels. This helps the school save about £500/year in energy bills.

Heating
  • We turn the heating down instead of opening the door.

  • If it is a hot day we turn the heating off.

  • The heating is controlled by thermostats

  • When water in the radiator is cold the fan switches off and saves more electricity

Thermostats

We monitor the thermostats so we try to use less energy. Each room has it's own thermostat, so each classroom can choose the best temperature for that class

Lights

The lights automatically turn off in classrooms if there is no movement for 8 mins,

All our school lights labelled 'Switch off'. This reminds everyone to turn off lights when they are not being used.

Meter Readings

We keep meter readings for every day. (This will help us find out when we are using too much energy and how to do something about it.)
