Our detailed plan of the three year project to become a better Global Citizen – a challenge for the 21st century

Hagbourne School children welcome their Greek visitors

Starting from our own baseline position we will run our project.

The project runs for three years and is designed to help the children become better global citizens through education for sustainable development.  There are six units, two per year.

Year 1

For the children to devise and implement energy saving measures to reduce consumption by 5%.  (Whole school approach)

To raise awareness of how recycled materials are valued in under developed countries, and to design and make toys from materials which would usually be thrown away, to illustrate this.

Year 2

For the children to devise and implement ways in which they can reduce school waste by 5% eg; paper reduction, composting and aluminium can recycling

To develop an appreciation of how children play traditional games in their schools.  Games to be documented, photographed and shared

Year 3

For the children to devise and implement ways of reducing water consumption by 5% whilst raising awareness of the global importance of water

Establish a shared mission statement of Global Citizenship which will be published and adopted by our Comenius Partner schools.  This can be linked with charitable fund raising schemes for international causes

3.  End Products

Examples of the pupil’s work will be published on a new web site in five languages, as well as by booklet and exhibition for parents, the community and other local schools.

The aims are designed as part of the development of the school curriculum

and are fully supported by the headteacher, staff and governing body of the school.

4.  Evaluation, progress and impact.

The project will be evaluated by all partner schools after each completed stage.  The co-ordinating school will take responsibility for drawing the evaluation together and suggesting changes as a result of the evaluation process.  The January conference will discuss such changes.  More detail is to be found on the Project Calendar attached.

The project will have the following impact on the families in the community;

  • children and adults will be much more aware of energy usage
  • some may wish to promote further energy saving measures in their homes
  • some children will establish long lasting friendships with pupils in other European schools
  • better appreciation of materials which can be recycled
  • shared ownership of a mission statement to promote better global citizenship

5.  Dissemination

The work of the project will be disseminated in the following ways;

  • via the world wide web site
  • via booklets and exhibitions
  • via digital photographs
  • community exhibitions
  • in-service training opportunities with other schools

6.  Participation

  • All children regardless of their ethnicity, native language, handicaps, race or gender will be taking an equal part in the project
  • Our link with a special school in Germany is especially important to us as a way of integrating handicapped children

7. Roles of schools taking part

Year 1   Year 2   Year 3

8.  Technologies to be used

All school will be communicating via e.mail.  Children will make great use made of digital cameras as a means of recording the work being done during the project.

A new web site will be created to celebrate the work done by the children.  All schools will contribute towards this.

9.  Active participation

From the project calendar attached you will see that the whole project has been designed.  They own this project and are active at every stage, including evaluation and planning for year 2 and 3.

10.  Project integration in the school curriculum

The project is an extension of the work already planned in the school curriculum.  It will add the important International Dimension to school’s environmental and citizenship areas as well as highlighting issues of sustainability.

The project has the support of staff and governors of each school and is fully endorsed by each headteacher.
